The art mini-gallery of the “European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024”

During the Riga Festival the “European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024” art mini-gallery was opened on the first floor of “Galerija Centrs” in Riga Old Town at Audēju street 16, where special works created by Estonian and Latvian artists will be on show until January 26 next year. The artworks will be changed once a week – symbolically counting down the time until Tartu and Southern Estonia region become the next European capital of culture.
The author of the first artwork in the “Tartu 2024” gallery is a Latvian artist residing in Tartu, Diāna Tamane, whose watercolor work “Always home” or “Alati kodos” will be on show till August 26. The starting point for “Always home” is the Latvian-Estonian border, which Diāna Tamane has crossed many times, because she has lived in Tartu for the past 17 years, but also feels at home in Latvia.
At the opening of the “Tartu 2024” art mini-gallery, Tartu Mayor Urmas Klaas said, “The opening ceremony of “Tartu 2024″ will take place on January 26 next year, when together with South Estonia, Tartu will officially become the European capital of culture. This is a major happening that we look forward to and are counting down the time till the opening ceremony. By congratulating Riga on its 822nd anniversary, we want to share our happy excitement and join the two neighboring nations in a special art project where 23 artists will participate in different genres. We are thankful to Riga for welcoming us and to the artists for their enthusiasm to make this idea come true in reality”.
From August 26, the “Tartu 2024” art mini-gallery will display an artwork by Latvian painter Laura Kaktiņa, which will be followed by artworks created by the Tartu Science Center AHHAA, graffiti artist Kiwie, multi-artist Kašer, membera of the “Stencibility” street art project from Tartu , Latvian tattoo artist Carlos U Man and others, each of which will contain the number of weeks until the major event in Estonia. The artworks will be changed at the weekend and will be on show during the opening hours of “Galerija Centrs” every day. Current information will be available on the social media profiles of “Tartu 2024” and “Galerija Centrs”.
